Official: Commons is taking off

2009-07-08

PLEASANT HILL - Development at Heritage Commons got off to a slow start, but things have begun to speed up. For months, a sample home sat alone in the North Cornwall Township retirement community along Oak Street and, as of last fall, there was just one resident.

But Debbie Bertolet, director of marketing and sales, told township supervisors Tuesday night that the lone resident finally has neighbors.

"We now have six families living there. The seventh is moving in soon, and the eighth just put down a deposit," Bertolet said. "We’re also getting a lot of interest from people in Maryland and Delaware," she added, noting the cost of living is less expensive in Lebanon County.

Heritage Commons sits on 50 acres along Oak Street and, when completed, will be the site for 85 independent-living homes, 153 apartments, assisted-living services and a community center. An all-volunteer board of directors is made up of area businessmen and women and retired citizens who want to establish a faith-based, affordable option for retirement living in the area, according to its Web site, http://www.heritagecommonspa.org. The retirement community is being built and operated by nonprofit group Lebanon Valley Catholic Home Inc.

Because the developer is required to provide a turning lane on Oak Street, the street will have to be widened. But the existing Met-Ed and Verizon utility poles will have to be relocated in order to do this. The developer is still waiting for an estimate from Met-Ed.
